It’s your watershed

About

We all live within the boundary of a watershed. What is a watershed, you may ask? Simply put, it is a geographic area that contains streams, rivers, and sometimes larger bodies of water such as drinking reservoirs, bays, or lakes. Common Waters focuses on environmental issues affecting the Chesapeake Bay region (New York, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, Delaware, and the District of Columbia), with an emphasis on areas of concern affecting our local watersheds.

Because we live in a watershed, our day-to-day activities can greatly affect the quality of the water within the watershed. When we upset the ecology of our waterways, it impacts:

• the quality of the fish and seafood that we eat, and hence our health

• the price of fish and seafood

• recreational activities such as swimming, fishing, and boating

• the economy (jobs for watermen; littered waterways decrease the value and enjoyment of property)

These are but a few examples of how polluted water affects our lives and the lives of our families. This blog will help you to not only explore your watershed, but will detail changes you can make to improve the quality of our waterways, and our communities.
